Heroic Rail Employee Suffers Life-Threatening Wounds During Multiple Stabbing Incident on Express Service

A courageous railway employee who intervened to protect travelers during a mass stabbing incident on a high-speed train has sustained life-threatening injuries, authorities confirmed on Sunday.

Details of the Terrifying Incident

CCTV video allegedly depicts the employee trying to halt the attacker as the train traveled between Peterborough and another station in the county. Bystanders described a frightening 14-minute period after the train departed Peterborough, with bloodied victims running through carriages.

The suspect, a 32-year-old British national from Peterborough, is in detention for questioning. Police declared a significant incident on the 6:25 pm service from Peterborough to King's Cross in downtown London.

Crisis Reaction and Aftermath

The incident on the weekend resulted in 11 people being treated in hospital after the train made an unplanned stop at platform 2 in Huntingdon. Several people have since been released from medical care.

A witness recorded the suspect brandishing a big knife and being subdued with a stun device as he confronted officers on the platform. He was allegedly heard shouting, "End my life, kill me."

“This awful event has created broad consequences. Our sympathies go out to the injured and their loved ones – particularly the brave member of rail staff whose relatives are being assisted by trained personnel,” said a high-ranking police official.

Union Reaction and Appeals for Action

Rail unions were swift to praise employees and call for more measures. One labor leader said he would be “requesting immediate discussions with authorities, train companies and law enforcement to ensure that we have the best available support, tools and effective protocols in place”.

Another union representative encouraged the train operator and authorities “to act quickly to review safety, to help the impacted employees, and to ensure nothing like this happens again”.

Driver Praised for Quick Thinking

The train driver who stopped the service at Huntingdon was reported as being “very shaken” but “well”, and has been commended by union representatives for doing “exactly the right thing”.

“He did not halt the service in the center of two stops where it’s clearly challenging for the first responders to reach, but he continued traveling until he arrived to Huntingdon, where the response was pretty much waiting,” explained a union representative.

Further Information

Police said they got the initial distress calls at 7:39 pm, and the train was forced to make an unplanned stop in Huntingdon at 7:50 pm.

An witness recounted initially wondering if the situation was a Halloween joke, but soon understood from individuals' expressions that it was real.

Police have confirmed there is nothing to suggest the event was a terror-related incident and have asked the community to provide with any additional information.

Train services on the affected route are anticipated to experience delays until Monday, with passengers advised to postpone their travel where feasible.

Individuals with details that could help the investigation are asked to reach police by sending a message a specific number with a case code.
