Labuschagne Dropped from Australia's One-Day International Lineup Versus Team India
The Australian selectors have left out Labuschagne from Australia's three-game ODI series against India, with in-form Queensland colleague Matt Renshaw earning a shock call-up.
Recent Form Result in Omission
The right-hander was left out from the one-day international team after being dismissed for one in both of his innings during the recent series against South Africa in August. The right-hander has a highest score of forty-seven in his most recent ten ODI innings.
Labuschagne has played 68 ODIs and accumulated 1,871 ODI runs at an average of 34.64 runs per dismissal, but will now focus on earning a Test recall ahead of the Ashes beginning in Perth on 21 November.
Renshaw's Return and Other Squad Changes
Labuschagne has shown signs of a return to form with a score of 160 for Queensland in the Sheffield Shield this week, while Renshaw also hit a hundred for the Bulls in the same game against Tasmania.
Renshaw could to make his white-ball international debut in the upcoming series against India after last being included in an ODI squad in 2022.
Renshaw has played 14 Tests with the last coming in India in 2023 but is also hoping for a Test return as Australia look for a answer to their batting top-order problems.
Bowling Returns and Injury Updates
Fast bowler Mitchell Starc makes a comeback for the ODI series against India after having time off since starring for Australia in the clean sweep of West Indies in July.
Big Bash star Mitch Owen could make his ODI debut after sustaining a head injury in the lead up to Australia’s most recent 50-over series against South Africa.
ODI captain Pat Cummins continues to be absent as he aims to recover from a spinal issue in time to captain Australia in the first Ashes Test in November.
Squad Selection Approach and Fixtures
Australia have selected a squad for only the first two T20s against India with the Ashes on the horizon, although Glenn Maxwell will miss all of the five-match series due to a wrist problem sustained in New Zealand.
Mitch Marsh will skipper both the ODI and T20 teams after smashing a century in the last match against New Zealand to seal a series clean sweep last week.
“We have named a squad for the ODI series and first two games of the T20 series as there will be some management through the later stages of the series as players get ready for the summer through domestic first-class matches,” Australia chair of selectors George Bailey said.
“The bulk of the T20 squad will stay as a group as it’s an important period in the preparation for the T20 World Cup next year, however we are trying to strike a balance to ensure we simultaneously get ready specific players for the Test series ahead.”
Australia’s three-match ODI series against India commences on October 19 in Perth, before the rivals play five T20s from October 29.
