The Former President's Woke Warning Overlooks The Continent's True Threat: Economic Stagnation.

Donald Trump's national security strategy presents a misguided assessment of the European Union. It claims that open-border policies and what it terms "woke" policies represent an existential risk to European civilization. However, this argument rests on a serious misreading of the situation. The actual challenge facing Europe is not cultural but technological and economic backwardness.

A Glaring Growth Divide Separating the US and Europe

The data reveal a sobering picture. Between 2008 and 2023, American economic output surged by eighty-seven percent, while a mere 13.5% increase for the European Union. Over this period, EU GDP per capita fell from over three-quarters to just half of the US level. Remarkably, even Mississippi now boasts a greater average income than major European economies like Italy and France.

Currently, roughly 50% of the world’s top fifty technology firms are American, while only four are from Europe.

The Innovation Deficit: The Core Question

The growing economic gap stems from superior efficiency gains in the US, fueled by technological innovation and higher total factor productivity. The landscape of world technology leadership is overwhelmingly American. In the last five decades, 241 US firms have grown into companies valued at more than $10bn, compared with just 14 in Europe.

This gap raises a vital issue: In the race for future industries like semiconductors, AI, and fusion energy, what is the EU stand? Experts widely concede it is essentially a contest between two involving the United States and China, with European nations entering at a clear disadvantage.

Root Causes of Europe's Innovation Gap

Several major reasons account for this technological divide.

  • Financing Ecosystem: The US boasts a much more robust and agile system for financing new ventures. Europe still lacks a true unified investment market, a factor that limits the growth potential of emerging companies.
  • Regulatory Fragmentation: Excessive and fragmented rules hamper Europe. A US startup can introduce a service under a single set of laws to access a consumer base of hundreds of millions. The European Union, despite a larger population, is split among twenty-seven different national regimes, creating huge internal barriers.
  • Cultural Attitudes: Views on entrepreneurial failure vary greatly. In parts of Europe, business failure was once viewed with penalties, whereas in the US, it is often considered a badge of experience.
  • Military Investment: The US benefits from a deeply integrated innovation pipeline linking defense and academia. Europe's long-term lack of spending in military capabilities has eroded its capacity for breakthrough innovation.

A Path Forward: Grounds for Cautious Optimism

Despite these hurdles, one can find causes for hope. Policymakers are growing more conscious of the existential challenge and have begun to advance substantial change. Key analyses on EU competitiveness and the single market point to the necessity of major reforms.

With the right policies and regulatory reforms, these assets might enable much higher degrees of commercial innovation.

The continent still possesses significant strengths: high-quality human capital, excellent education systems, and world-class research institutions. Coupled with a large internal market and substantial household savings, these foundations could trigger a surge of investment and entrepreneurship.

Importantly, even if the EU does not become the leader in creating cutting-edge technologies, it can still significantly increase productivity by implementing and tailoring advancements from other regions.

A Critical Juncture

Europe now faces a critical crossroads. To paraphrase a famous line, economic erosion often happens "gradually and then suddenly". To date, Europe's slide in innovation has been steady. But, without decisive action to address its structural weaknesses, today's slow erosion could turn into a rapid and permanent loss of global economic relevance.
